A. RESIDENCE CARD
When you arrive at the airport and present your Certificate of Eligibility, Passport and Visa for immigration clearance, you will receive a “Resident Card”. This card is issued to foreigners staying in Japan for the medium and long term.
In case if a student wants to work part-time, when making immigration procedures, students must apply for a permit to work outside the status of residence.
During their stay period in Japan, students do not need to carry their passports with them, but they must carry their residence cards at all times. Short-term students will not have a residence card, so they will have to bring a passport.
After receiving the residence card, students must register their address at the reception counter of the administrative office of the city/district where they live. This procedure must be done within 14 days of entry.
B. NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE
After registering the address, students need to quickly apply for National Health Insurance. With insurance, international students can also receive the same compensation as Japanese.
C. EXTENSION OF STATUS OF RESIDENCE
If the period of study exceeds the permitted period of stay upon entry, students must submit an application for an extension of the period of stay to the Immigration Department and obtain a permit. This procedure can be applied from 3 months before the end of the period of stay.
D. PART-TIME JOB (ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE)
Students with “study abroad” status can work up to 28 hours a week. During a long school break, students can work up to 40 hours in a certain period of time. In this case, you must submit a certificate issued by the school to your workplace. Except during long vacations, if you must work more than 28 hours, you need to ask the school for permission in advance.
The permit to work outside the status of residence is only valid when the student with a status of residence of “Student” is studying at the school and is still attending classes. When entering the country, if you apply for a permit at the airport, you can get a permit as well, so the school encourages students to submit the application for a permit to work outside of their status of residence to the immigration officer. If you do not apply at the airport, you can also apply at the Immigration Department after the date of entry, but it will take about 1 month to get the permit. For further information on how to apply for a permit after entry, please ask the school staff.
If students do the part-time job without a permit or work beyond the prescribed hours, they will violate the law on extra-curricular activities and will not be able to continue their studies abroad life in Japan.
E. OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT
The school encourages students to open a bank account as soon as they arrive in Japan. Bank accounts are needed for many cases such as: when doing part-time jobs, when renewing visas, when making money transactions with family members, when receiving scholarships, etc.
*When returning home, students must keep the account balance at 0 and complete the account closing procedures.
*Students are absolutely not allowed to let other people keep or lend their residence cards, insurance cards, bank books and cards. Students are not allowed to give to another person for any reason. If a practitioner’s papers are used by criminal gangs to do bad things, the practitioner will also become an accomplice and will be severely punished.
F. BUY A CELL PHONE
A personal phone number is essential when looking for a job in Japan. Moreover, to live in Japan, there are many necessary procedures that require contact details, so the smartphone is extremely convenient.
G. DISCOUNTED TRAIN TICKETS FOR STUDENTS
Monthly train tickets are a convenient way to reduce transportation costs. You can use it as many times as you want to take the train from the nearest station where you live to the nearest school station
*Absolutely do not give or lend the monthly ticket to others.
